Painter born in Boston, USA under the name William Mark Fisher. Mark Fisher, as he is known, studied at Gleyre's Atelier in Paris in 1863, at the same time as Sisley. He returned to America before settling in England in 1872. Foremost an English Impressionist, he exhibited at the NEAC, RA, the Royal Watercolour Society and the Essex Art Club of which for a time he was President. Fisher was elected an Associate of the RA, 1911 and RA, 1919. He was a long-standing friend of George Clausen who wrote an appreciation for Fisher's memorial exhibition held at the Leicester Galleries in London in 1924. The father of Margaret Fisher-Prout, his work is in the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery, Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries, Burton Art Gallery, Hastings Museum and Art Gallery, Leeds City Art Gallery, Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery, Rotherham Art Gallery, Tate Gallery and the Towner Art Gallery.
