Henry William Banks Davis was born in Finchley, London, England in 1833 and studied at the Royal Academy Schools in London from 1851 to 1854. He subsequently worked primarily as a sculptor and painter of landscapes and pastoral scenes. Many of his landscapes were of Wales and Scotland, and Northern France. He owned a chateau in Boulogne sur Mer where he spent some of his time. A prolific artist, Davis exhibited virtually every year at the Royal Academy in London from 1852 to [posthumously] 1915. He also exhibited at the Fine Art Society, Thos. Agnew and Sons Ltd., Dudley Gallery, New Gallery and Arthur Tooth & Sons in London; Royal Birmingham Society of Artists; Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts; Manchester Academy of Fine Arts; and at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
