It is stressed that the paintings at Worcester College are not in public ownership. In accordance with the charitable aims of the College, which is a private institution, we are including our paintings on this website to widen public knowledge and for the benefit of scholarship. Worcester College owns a surprisingly varied collection of pictures. As well as portraits of benefactors, provosts, fellows and college servants, there are history paintings, landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, sporting pictures and other genres from the sixteenth century to the present day. A series of bequests and gifts have enriched the collection since the re-foundation in 1714. The bequest of a former fellow, Treadway Russell Nash, in 1811 brought the college ten Dutch, Flemish and Italian pictures acquired on the Grand Tour. Landscapes by William Turner of Oxford were given by Professor Robert Henry Lightfoot in 1948. Other pictures were commissioned by the College, including group portraits of the Senior Common Room and Junior Common Room by William Rothenstein and Edward Halliday. The most recent portrait of a Provost is that of Richard Smethurst by Jennifer McRae. The paintings are hung throughout the College in private areas. Access to paintings is normally reserved to those involved in academic research, though other requests will be sympathetically considered.
