Painter and teacher, born in Edinburgh where he continued to live. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and Moray House College of Education, 1941–51, although from 1942–7 served in Army, mainly in the Far East. In 1955 Baillie became resident tutor at the National Gallery of Canada Summer School, in Ottawa. Then from 1960–88 he taught at Edinburgh College of Art, finally as senior lecturer in the drawing and painting school. In 1980 the English Speaking Union sponsored Baillie to travel to India, Nepal and Sikkim; this resulted in a body of work. Baillie was president of RSW, 1974–88 and was elected RSA in 1979, becoming its president in 1990; he was made Hon. RA and Hon. RWA in 1991. After a one-man show at Saltire Society Festival Exhibition in 1961 Baillie went on to show extensively in Scotland and England, notably at Lower Loomshop Gallery, Lower Largo, Fife; Heal’s Gallery; and retrospective at Kirkcaldy Art Gallery in 1977.
