More about

Southampton Art School, first established in 1856 has included Hubert Von Herkomer, Edward John Gregory and Graham Ovenden amongst its students. The School of Art is now incorporated into Southampton Solent University with its art collection formally established in 1998 to mark the opening of the Sir Michael Andrews Building by HRH The Princess Royal. The collection comprises works by teaching staff, students, and other artists associated with the university and includes painting, sculpture, photography, illustration, printmaking, bookworks and other graphic arts. Many works have been acquired from the annual student degree shows and a small but significant group of historic items acquired as teaching examples. In all, over 700 items are held in the collection with approximately 250 on display. Painters represented in the collection include Maggie Hambling, Terry Frost, Richard Eurich, Alfred Parsons and George Popkin. Regular changing exhibitions in the Michael Andrews Gallery showcase the work of staff and students and reflect the trends in art and design in Southampton.
