The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) was formed in 1973 from the merger of the Royal Manchester College of Music (founded by Sir Charles Hallé in 1893) with the Northern School of Music (founded in 1920). The College is an internationally acclaimed conservatoire and leading performance venue situated in Manchester. The small collection of paintings consists mainly of portraits of former Principals of the RNCM and Northern School of Music and works by twentieth-century artists, some with a musical subject. Particularly significant in artistic terms are the portrait of Adolph Brodsky by William Cartledge and two paintings of string quartets by Dorothy Bradford.
