The Central Manchester Hospitals has 28,000 staff and manages one of the largest Children’s Hospitals in Europe. The art collection has a long history with works from the eighteenth century to the present day contemporary works. The hospital Trust hosts the longest serving Arts Team in the history of the NHS, Lime Art, and new works are being added through their work every year. These range from traditional paintings to interactive and multimedia works and some large scale public artworks. Lime Art has won several national and international awards for both art projects in hospitals and projects in the community relating to public health issues. See www.limeart.org The very early oil paintings in the collection such as the portrait of the first President of the Manchester Royal Infirmary, James Massey, was presented to the Infirmary by artist William Tate in 1793. William Tate is known to have worked with artist Joseph Wright of Derby, finishing some of his paintings. Later works in the collection include Charles Shiels and his humorous portrayal of hospital life, ‘Hospitality Haven Lane’ and a portrait of the current (2012) Chairman of the Hospital Trust, Peter Mount, by artist in residence at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Lucy Burscough.
