Groam House Museum is situated in the Black Isle village of Rosemarkie, occupying an 18th-century building gifted to the community by local businessman Mario Pagliari. The museum displays an internationally important collection of Pictish sculpture from Rosemarkie of which a magnificent symbol-bearing cross-slab, carved around the year 800, is the centrepiece. The family of George Bain, a leading figure in modern Celtic art, donated his artwork and archive to Groam House Museum in 1998. His landscapes and portraits form the bulk of the oil painting collection. This nationally significant collection of Celtic art has been supplemented with material to set Bain within the context of the Celtic Art Revival movement. Exhibitions using this material are created every other year in the museum’s mezzanine gallery. The museum also holds a small collection of archaeology and social history items relating to the Black Isle. This includes artefacts, photographs, watercolours and oil paintings.
