Rachel Bates is an archivist and freelance writer, specialising in social and cultural history. She has a BA in Art History (University of Birmingham) and her research on the war art of Elizabeth Butler informed an AHRC-funded PhD on the cultural afterlife of the Crimean War. Rachel has published a number of articles on this topic, and has written for social history magazines on a range of other subjects – from portrait miniatures to the origins of April Fools’ Day. She is a champion of art and art education, and is interested in Dutch, Belgian and British art.
