James Russell is an author, art historian and curator who specialises in modern British art. Russell is the Curator of 'Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious', at Dulwich Picture Gallery from November 2024 to May 2025. He has been a fan of Garwood's uncanny paintings and collages, sharp-eyed wood engravings and decorative marbled papers for many years, and was able to feature a selection in the 2018 exhibition 'In Relation: Nine Couples who Transformed Modern British Art' at RWA Bristol. The Dulwich show is Russell's third for exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery, following previous exhibitions devoted to Eric Ravilious (2015) and Edward Bawden (2018). He is the author of the Tirzah Garwood: Beyond Ravilious catalogue, available to purchase from Dulwich Picture Gallery's shop.
As well as lecturing for The Arts Society, Russell gives illustrated talks and runs study days for museums, arts organisations and festivals including the V&A, Dulwich Picture Gallery, Pallant House, Towner, Royal Watercolour Society, Hastings Contemporary, Leeds Art Gallery, National Maritime Museum, Nottingham Contemporary, RWA Bristol, Hatchards, Blenheim Literature Festival, The Art Fund, Salisbury Museum, Ways with Words and Canterbury Festival.
