Andrew Parkinson graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a degree in Drawing and Painting in 1989 and has worked at the Pier Arts Centre in Stromness since 1995, most recently in the role of Curator.
During this time the Pier Arts Centre Collection has grown significantly with works by Olafur Eliasson, Camilla Low, Edmund de Waal, Anish Kapoor and Sara Barker, among others, added to its Modernist core. He has also worked with many contemporary artists on exhibitions of their work including Bill Viola, Christine Borland, Roger Ackling and Mary Newcomb.
Most recently he has been involved in curating the touring exhibition, 'Pushing paper: contemporary drawing from 1970 to today', in collaboration with the British Museum and is working with the artist Rosalind Nashashibi, artist in residence at The National Gallery, on a new work for the collection commissioned by the Contemporary Art Society.
Andrew completed a Master of Research at the University of the Highlands and Islands in 2021 looking at Rackwick Valley on Hoy and the impact it made on the creative work of the poet George Mackay Brown, composer Peter Maxwell Davies and artist Sylvia Wishart.
