Hartlepool Art Gallery opened in 1996 in what was formerly Christ Church in West Hartlepool. It now houses a wide range of exhibitions and displays works from the Hartlepool Borough Council Collection of some 1,500 works. Amongst its 20th Century highlights, Lucian Freud's Head of a Woman is perhaps the best known work, and contemporaries Frank Auerbach and John Bratby are also represented. There is a particularly strong group of works by Eric Atkinson and Seaton Carew Beach by Margaret Green is perhaps the highlight of many landscapes within the collection featuring the sea and local industries. A works on paper collection includes Stanley Spencer and L.S. Lowry.
