Folding fan, the front guard enriched with a crown and monogram ‘M’ in diamonds. The leaf is painted on the recto with two seated women in the regional dress. The verso is painted with a crown, imperial eagles and monogram of the fan’s former owner, Princess Mathilde Bonaparte (1820–1904). The costumes depicted on the recto resemble traditional dresses worn by women of Trieste, the birthplace of Princess Mathilde. She, too, is known to have painted several portraits of women clothed in similar attire.
