Born at Dysart in Fife, Alison studied at Glasgow School of Art and in Paris and Italy. He joined the teaching staff of Edinburgh College of Art in 1913, retiring as Head of the School of Drawing and Painting at the College in 1946, when he moved to London. He painted mainly portraits and interiors. He was a founder-member of the Society of Eight, an exhibiting group of like-minded artists, along with the Scottish Colourist F. C. B. Cadell.
