Although Douthwaite exhibited regularly, her individual style was often considered outside the conventions of mainstream art and she was not interested in seeking a specific place in the established art world, instead being comfortable to be linked to ‘outsider art‘. She produced assemblages, collages, paintings, drawings and prints that are both uncompromising and unique. She noted that in her work she dealt ‘in anger, joy, rage and happiness‘. This is perhaps one of her lighter works.
