This portrait of Lord Chief Justice William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, was painted by the Scottish portraitist David Martin. It is a reduced version of a full-length by Martin, painted in 1770 for Christ Church College, Oxford, Lord Mansfield’s alma mater. The portrait depicts Mansfield as almost regal, clothed in a baron’s coronation robes, with his right hand on an open copy of Cicero, indicating his persona as a Renaissance Man. Lord Mansfield was fluent in Latin and translated Cicero’s works into English whilst at Oxford University. The background is dominated by a bust of Greek poet Homer, which had been bequeathed to Lord Mansfield by his great friend Alexander Pope. The twisted Solomonic column (so-called from their supposed used in King Solomon’s temple) is an allusion to the wisdom on Lord Mansfield’s legal judgements.
