The overmantle painting in the Adam Library is a late-twentieth-century copy after the original portrait of William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield by Scottish artist David Martin which once hung in the room. Martin painted several versions of this portrait type, showing William Murray in peer’s coronation robes. The earliest versions show Lord Mansfield’s in baron’s robes with only two rows of ermine and evidently date from before his elevation to the rank of Earl in 1776. This modern copy is a hybrid version of two later paintings which show Lord Mansfield in the robes of an Earl, with three rows of ermine. The original, once at Kenwood and now at Scone Palace was the subject of intensive study by the portraitist Wendy Norris; however, the final version was painted from the variant at Christchurch, Oxford.
