inscribed on the front of the pedestal, the letters painted black: TO THE MEMORY OFTHE RIGHT HONOURABLE / WILLIAM HUSKISSON, / FOR TEN YEARS ONE OF THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THIS CITY / IN PARLIAMENT. / THIS STATION HE RELINQUISHED IN MDCCCXXIII, / WHEN YIELDING TO A SENSE OF PUBLICK DUTY / HE ACCEPTED THE OFFER OF BEING RETURNED FOR LIVERPOOL, / FOR WHICH HE WAS SELECTED ON ACCOUNT OF / THE ZEAL AND INTELLIGENCE DISPLAYED BY HIM / IN ADVANCING THE COMMERCIAL PROSPERITY OF THE EMPIRE / HIS DEATH WAS OCCASIONED BY AN ACCIDENT NEAR THAT TOWN / ON THE XV OF SEPTEMBER MDCCCXXX, / AND CHANGED A SCENE OF TRIUMPHANT REJOICING / INTO ONE OF GENERAL MOURNING / AT THE URGENT SOLICITATION OF HIS CONSTITUENTS / HE WAS INTERRED IN THE CEMETERY THERE / AMID THE UNAFFECTED SORROW OF ALL CLASSES OF PEOPLE. / GIFTED WITH EXTRAORDINARY NATURAL ABILITIES / HE CULTIVATED THEM WITH UNREMITTING APPLICATION / AND MATURED THEM BY LONG REFLECTION AND EXPERIENCE. / HE EARLY DEVOTED HIMSELF TO THE SERVICE OF HIS COUNTRY / AND WAS CALLED TO SOME OF THE HIGHEST OFFICES OF THE STATE / WHICH HE FILLED ALIKE WITH HONOUR TO HIMSELF / AND ADVANTAGE TO THE PUBLICK. / THE INHABITANTS OF CHICHESTER AND ITS NEIGHBOURHOOD, / DEEPLY REGRETTING HIS UNTIMELY LOSS, / HAVE CAUSED THIS STATUE TO BE ERECTED / TO RECORD TO POSTERITY / THEIR ADMIRATION OF HIS TALENTS AND INTEGRITYAS A STATESMAN, / THEIR RESPECT AND AFFECTION FOR HIS PRIVATE CHARACTER / BORN MDCCLXX DIED MDCCCXXX.
