This portrait depicts William Garforth, a merchant and Governor of the Company of Merchant Adventurers from 1719–1721. He donated five pounds a year to be paid for a house in Micklegate in support of the widows of the hospital at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall. Painted in a feigned oval, he wears a grey wig, crimson velvet coat and a white cravat. William Garforth was a Freeman of the Gild of Freemen of the City of York in 1699.

The inscription on the panel below the portrait reads: 'Wm Garforth Esq. Late Gouernvour of this Company, in his life time, gave Five pounds a year forever, to be paid out of a House in Micklegate, towards the Maintenance of the Widdows, in our Hospital, 1722.'
