William Forbes-Mitchell, a native of Aberdeenshire, enlisted in the 93rd Highlanders, with which regiment he served through the Crimean and Indian Mutiny campaigns. After the Mutiny, he started a rope factory in Calcutta. He was the author of 'Reminiscences of the Great Mutiny, 1857–1859' (1893). He died in Calcutta in 1905.
