This half-length portrait shows him in formal dress, giving the immediate impression of wealth and dignity. As a wealthy financier he was able to collect ethnography and archaeology, which he used to create the Blackmore Museum. He was also a patron of the arts, helping to support the Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
