Woodrow’s intense, painterly handling transforms an everyday suburban scene into a shimmering, tactile landscape, rich with possibility and colour. Joash Woodrow was born to Polish-Jewish parents in Leeds in 1927. He trained at Leeds College of Art then served in the army as a cartographer in Egypt from 1945–1948. Between 1950 and 1953 he studied at the Royal College of Art, but shortly after graduating suffered a nervous breakdown and returned to Leeds to live with his mother and brother. From this time onwards he began to produce a large outpouring of work, which only increased after the death of his mother (in 1962) and brother (in 1978). After a decline in health, Woodrow moved to sheltered accommodation in the 1990s. After his death over 700 paintings and thousands of drawings were found in his studio-home.
