Anthony Lam worked with the Bangladeshi community in East London throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, first as a youth worker and then as a photographer. Primarily interested in exploring ideas of difference and culture, he captured the sensibilities and identities of both Bangladeshi and British cultures. Most Bangladeshis who settled in Britain came from Sylhet, a rural district in north-eastern Bangladesh. This community was the last major movement of people from South Asia to enter the UK in the late 1960s, settling primarily in Tower Hamlets, at a time when major industries were in decline and cheap labour was required for service industries and the finishing trades in the sweatshops of the East End. By the early 1990s, the Bangladeshi community comprised nearly a quarter of the total population in Tower Hamlets.
