the east face of the plinth carries the carved inscription: THIS· CROSS· WAS· ERECTED / BY· THE· INHABITANTS· OF· / AMPNEY· CRUCIS / IN· MEMORY· OF· THE· MEN / WHO· FELL / IN· THE· GREAT· WAR / 1914-1918 / WHOSE· NAMES / ARE· INSCRIBED· HEREON / AND· IN· THANKFULNESS· FOR / THE· SAFE· RETURN / OF· MANY· OTHERS· WHO· WENT / FROM· THIS· VILLAGE; the north and south faces of the plinth are inscribed with the ranks, names and regiments of the fallen: twenty in total; the west face is inscribed with a cross and below: THEIR NAME / LIVETH / FOR / EVERMORE / ECCLESIASTICUS· 44· 14; the east face of the upper step carries the carved inscription: THE WORLD WAR / 1939-1945; the faces of the step below carries the ranks, names regiments and services of the fallen, four in total; on the north side of the lowest step is an applied stone plaque, inscribed: RENOVATION CARRIED OUT BY / THE SCHRODER FAMILY / NOVEMBER 2008
