A view of the outside of Walmgate Bar and the barbican showing the rural nature of this part of York in the early nineteenth century and the cottages built against the south side of the barbican. The bar itself was occupied as a house by the Brown family as the washing on the line at the top of the tower shows. The view is also interesting for showing how much of the barbican was rebuilt during restoration.
