Susan Adams was born in Kent but lives and works in Wales. This series of 30 paintings resulted from her appointment in 2002 as Cywaith Cymru/Oriel Mostyn Artist-in-Residence on Ynys Enlli (Bardsey Island), the legendary ‘Island of Twenty Thousand Saints’ off the coast of the Llyn Peninsula, North Wales. She arrived on the Island with a plan to produce 30 paintings during her 30 days residence, as well as work in video and sculpture, all inspired by the idea of the presence of the Saints. Ynys Enlli's residents, visitors and places appear in the paintings, as do the messages on pebbles left by the imagined Saint Isiona (Saint Isobel) for the equally imagined Saint Loge. These Saints had featured in a previous installation work by the artist, ‘Escape from the Woodshed’.
