The artist was born in Paris in 1802 and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts. He then studied at the studio of Anne-Louis Girodet (1767–1824). Gudin first exhibited at the Salon in 1822, winning a prestigious gold medal in 1824. He became the leading painter of marine subjects and was appointed Peintre de la Marine Royale in 1827.

Gudin spent a considerable amount of time in Scotland, particularly Aberdeenshire, after his marriage to Margaret-Louis Hay, the daughter of Lord Hay of Seaton in 1842. An inscription on the back of the frame reads: ‘Gudin/Les Rochers de Gerdle-ness. Près d’Aberdeen’, which confirms the view as Girdle Ness, a treacherous headland to the south of Aberdeen Harbour.
