Gudin spent a considerable amount of time in Scotland, particularly Aberdeenshire, after his marriage to Margaret-Louis Hay, the daughter of Lord Hay of Seaton in 1842. An inscription on the back of the frame reads: ‘Gudin/Les Rochers de Gerdle-ness. Près d’Aberdeen’, which confirms the view as Girdle Ness, a treacherous headland to the south of Aberdeen Harbour.
