This painting depicts a small area of the Lews Castle grounds. These were first laid out in the mid-nineteenth century by Sir James Matheson, owner of the island, and his wife, as private gardens and woodlands surrounding his island residence, Lews Castle. These are now regarded as important amongst Scotland’s historic gardens and they contain many exotic species in their woodlands. The ground and the castle were gifted to the town of Stornoway in 1923 by Lord Leverhulme, the last owner of the island and they have since become a popular and well-used recreational resource.

The painting is the work of an unknown and enthusiastic amateur. It was perhaps painted in the 1960s.
