This painting of the Sutherland coast and hills, seen at night from Dornoch beach, shows the Earl's Cross in the middle distance with Ben Bhraggie and Dunrobin Castle further afield. The Earl's Cross is an unusual looking monument that still exists. It is thought to have been erected in the thirteenth century to mark the division between Gilbert's Church lands and those of the 1st Earl of Sutherland.

The artist's mother (Bessie?) was a noted local amateur painter.
