The head of this characterful little boy was modelled on Victor, the son of the artist’s West African cook. A convenient model, he must also have appealed on account of his childish charm and endearing looks. Epstein wrote: 'it was a good thing that there was something to compensate for his mother's culinary defects.' Epstein was interested in and inspired by different world cultures and was a passionate collector of African cultural objects.
