François Perrier was a French painter and printmaker. He spent much of his career in Rome, where he was influenced by the work of fellow Frenchman Nicolas Poussin. This painting is attributed to Perrier on stylistic grounds and probably dates from his second Roman period or shortly after his return to Paris in 1645.

The mythological scene depicts an episode taken from Roman writer Virgil's epic poem the Aeneid, in which the goddess of love, Venus presents her son, the Trojan prince Aeneas, with a spectacular suit of armour. The influence of Poussin is evident in the elegant forms and gestures of the figures and in the shallow, classicizing composition.
