Sandra Blow visited Cornwall in 1957, staying first with Patrick Heron at Eagles Nest, situated above the farming village of Zennor a few miles west of St Ives, and then renting a cottage close by at Tregerthen.

By 1958, when this work was painted, she was an established artist and a pioneer of British abstraction. Her concern with the materiality of her paintings can be seen in the textured surfaces she created through adding sand and charcoal to liquid cement. Although Blow returned to London in 1958, she continued to make working trips to West Penwith and was closely associated with many of the artists based in Cornwall, in particular Roger Hilton and Peter Lanyon.
