Inscription description
‘UNITY’ / This sculpture was installed on Wednesday 20 April 2022. / The design for the sculpture came from the inspired drawings of Rohan Gidha and Noah Strickland, / art students at Hitchin Boys’ School in 2018. Asked by the Quakers to envisage a sculpture for / the Peace Garden, they proposed a design based on the hand gesture for the word ‘Unity’ in British / Sign Language. The brushed stainless-steel sculpture was designed by St Albans environmental artist and sculptor, Diane Maclean. Construction was by Birch Engineering in ware. / The concept of Unity is important to Quakers. We trust that if we come together in a spirit of / seeking God’s will, we can find unity despite individual differences of opinion. We do this through / gathering in silence, seeking the Light inside each of us and listening to the spoken word of others. / We find unity in our shared testimonies to Truth, Simplicity, Equality and Peace. / This sculpture would not have happened without the generosity of local Quakers, the many people / who donated to our crowdfunding campaign in 2021, and a grant from North Herts Council. / We hope that this representation of Unity will be an inspiration to the people of Hitchin and visitors to our Peace Garden.
