The figure of a young soldier strides forward, smiling and waving his cap in the air. His gun hangs by his side in his left hand, his helmet lies on the ground beside his feet. The figure stands on a shallow bronze base mounted on a rectangular pedestal fitted on all four sides with bronze relief panels. The relief facing the river depicts two naval officers looking out to sea from the bridge of a ship, one looking through a telescope, the other pointing into the distance. The north side relief contains two female figures in profile, one dressed as a nurse, the other in military uniform. The west side relief contains three airmen in hats and goggles standing in a group, with a propeller and an aircraft wheel visible to the right. A row of dentils runs below each panel.
