Standing at the entrance to the Firth of Forth the great basalt mass of the Bass Rock with its tall cliffs dominates the view. In this painting, the rock is seen silhouetted against the sky from the cliffs just to the east of North Berwick. The colours are predominantly the grey and blue of sea and sky, but their cool tints are lifted by the warmer tones of rocks and beach. The handling of the paint is broad and energetic. It invokes as much as it describes the stormy movement of clouds and water.
