Theatrical impresario Tommy Swanson negotiated with the previous owners of the Opera House, the Rank Organisation, for 18 months before concluding the purchase at the end of the 1959 summer season. He made major renovations to the theatre. Dick Ray subsequently owned the theatre from 1976 to 1996, at which point, the people of Jersey became the owners. The bust was presented to Tommy Swanson on the evening of a gala performance at the theatre in celebration of his enormous achievements.
