This work depicts a group of three peasants in a tavern, a woman to the left, seated on a wooden bench offering a horn to the man on her left. A man in a black hat sits on a wooden bench in the foreground to the right, with a pipe in his left hand, and a bowl in his right, resting on the woman's lap. Behind him there is a second man whose face is obscured by his hat. They are engaged in conversation. They sit on bare wooden benches in a dark, unadorned room. They wear very simple clothes in dark, dank shades of blue, green and grey.
