Pryde is chiefly remembered today for his poster designs for the theatre in collaboration with his brother-in-law William Nicholson. Like many of his large paintings, this disturbing and enigmatic image is highly suggestive of a stage-set for the theatre or opera. However it may well have been inspired in part by Pryde’s visit to Venice in 1911, together with capriccio views by eighteenth-century French and Italian painters, and the ancient ruins and imaginary prisons etched by Piranesi.
