Ian Fleming studied at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) from 1924–1929. After travelling to London, Paris, the south of France and Spain, Fleming returned to Glasgow and joined the GSA as a lecturer in 1932. He remained on the staff until the outbreak of the Second World War and returned for two additional spells of teaching in 1941 and 1946. Although known primarily as a printmaker and watercolourist, Fleming completed this striking double-portrait of the painters Robert Colquhoun and Robert MacBryde in 1937/1938. The painting was shown at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh in 1938 and won the prestigious Guthrie Award. Colquhoun and MacBryde were talented artists in their own right and after graduating from the GSA moved to London where they shared a studio with John Minton and Jankel Adler.
