A roughly-hewn boulder of white stone with a carved frieze of the heads of miners, their wives and children at its base. The stone surmounts a polished square pedestal and is surrounded by steel railings, the spikes of which bear a small moulded figurative head. There are 95 heads in all. This piece was the last in a series of community participation artworks erected in 1996 for the Easington-based 'Looking Beyond' project. After early consultations between the artist and the villagers, it was decided that Haswell's artwork for the project should be a 'long overdue' memorial to those who lost their lives in the mining accident of 1844. The design was developed in a series of workshops on sculpture techniques run for local children by the artist and the stone was carved and erected on site.
