The performance of music in the home constituted not only a useful social accomplishment but a genuine pleasure both within the family circle and for more formal evening entertainment. Here the young performers are likely to be siblings; we have to imagine whether they have an audience or are practising for a later performance. Hardy himself began to train as a musician, following in his father's footsteps, before deciding to become an artist like his elder brother George. In the 1850s he went to live in an artists’ colony at Cranbrook, Kent with about six other artists who focused on painting scenes of everyday life.
