Alfred Oliver had a love of views of North Wales. His studio at Capel Curig faced Snowdon, the subject of this and many of his works. This painting depicts the view on the road in Dyffryn Mymbyr, with the mountains fittingly covered in snow. Mounted above the back door of his studio was a twin-bladed propeller, a memorial to his son killed in action in the First World War. This is probably the Captain T. A. Oliver, RFC, listed as ‘Previously Missing, now reported Killed’ in a Roll of Honour posted on 17th January 1918. Born in Nottingham, Oliver became a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists founded in 1880, one of the oldest art societies in the country. Working in the style of late Victorian and Edwardian naturalistic painters, he exhibited extensively, including showing seven works at the Royal Academy between 1909 and 1920.
