Scene depicting the seven works of mercy – known historically as actions and practices which the Roman Catholic Church considered as expectations to be fulfilled by believers. Men, women and children stand begging before a man pictured behind a table stacked full of bread; he hands out the food to the poor. Further scenes of mercy can be seen throughout the painting; in the street and from doorways, men and women offer to help the poor and sick. A church can be seen in the far background. The colours are rich and naturalistic.
