The Reverend Morice oversaw the official founding of Hoddesdon parish in 1856 as the vicar of the Church of St Catherine and St Paul from the mid-1840s. Until then, Hoddesdon had been divided between the parishes of Broxbourne and Amwell. There had been a chapel in the town since 1336 on the site of the Clock Tower but by 1700 this was run down. In 1820, the private chapel of ease, built by Robert Plomer of Rawdon House, became a public church.
