The sitter is shown standing in front of a vaguely defined background, wearing a dark coat with a white 'puritan' style collar and a tall black hat. He is shown with chin-length grey hair, holding a large book cradled in one arm. Creighton was one of John Wesley's principal ministers living and preaching in Hackney. One of his daughters, Jane, married George Loddiges, manager of the famous plant nursery in Hackney. Creigton’s son married Jane Renton, the sister of the artist. This painting was originally accessioned as a portrait of Mr Conrad Loddiges: Renton was the son of Conrad Loddiges's head gardener and lived in Hoxton. Renton exhibited with the Royal Academy from 1799–1840, submitting some 40 pictures. He specialised in portraits of religious nonconformists.
