Before he joined A. V. Roe & Co. as a test pilot, Orrell was an RAF pilot, a ‘barnstormer’ performing aerial acrobatics and a commercial pilot. His work at A. V. Roe & Co included the development of the Lancaster bomber. He became the company’s chief test pilot in 1947.
