Following Jewish religious practice, all first born children were dedicated to God. At the same time the mother was purified. Each ceremony required a payment, of money, and of two turtledoves, respectively. This happened 40 days after the birth. When Joseph and Mary went to the Temple they were greeted by Simeon, a devout man (sometimes represented as a priest) and Anna, a prophetess.

In this work, Mary presents Jesus to Simeon for his blessing. A young woman kneels, offering two doves in a basket. Joseph stands with Anna, on the left. The two men on the right with Simeon appear to be in sixteenth-century dress. Perhaps they are donors.
