Born in Metz, de Nomé travelled to Rome in 1602 and settled in Naples from 1610. He specialised in religious and historical subjects with imaginative, even bizarre settings, often inspired by the antique and medieval monuments of Naples. His sensuous handling of paint is seen in this painting in the thick impasto which gives a relief-like effect, while his inventive details include vegetation growing from the ancient buildings.
