John Ruthven was born in Eaglesfield, near Ecclefechan, Dumfriesshire, to Robert Ruthven (1826–1872), a cotton-weaver, and his wife Margaret Ruthven, née Johnstone (1827–1904). He married Mary Gladstone (c.1853–1943), the daughter of a wool stocking framework knitter, in 1884 and the couple had four children. Census records show that, despite humble beginnings, he rose from being a wool-sorter in 1881 and 1891 to being a tweed merchant in 1901. He reportedly lived for 30 years in Hawick, where he was an enthusiastic and accomplished bagpipe player, and member of the town's first pipe band. Two of his sons moved to Australia, and he had not long settled in Australia himself with the rest of the family before he passed away at Glen Innes, New South Wales.
