In 1954 Bomberg and his wife, the artist Lillian Holt, returned to the Andalucian town of Ronda, set high in southern Spain, where he had painted many canvases twenty years earlier. Bomberg was increasingly infirm but still determined to make images of great power, despite his own weakness. Journeying by donkey in the valley of the River Tajo, he and Lillian set up their easels about a mile from the rock face. The resultant painting has a dream-like quality; the surging mass of rock seems to be melting into the light as rock and sky are woven together in a haze of expressive and chromatically rich brushstrokes. The loosely handled paint conveys a sense of transience, reflecting Bomberg's own state of mind.
